Morning Gorgeous Peeps. Hope you are all having a great weekend. It’s a bit overcast in Kent today so we are snuggling up on the sofa watching Paddingon 2 (which is brilliant by the way – especially if you have kids). If you are also still in your PJ’s and fancy a bit of Sunday reading then we have a SUPER talented and SUPER lovely wedding invitation supplier to share with you today. Ladies and Gents, allow me to introduce you to Katie of Hand drawn by Katie. She specialises in the most beautiful range of illustrated stationery all designed and created in house by her and produced on high quality 300 gsm gesso card. Her existing design range can be personalised to suit your wedding and colour scheme and she also offers a bespoke service where she can design something completely from scratch, making it totally unique and personal to you.

What I love the most about Katie is her business started in the exact same way as Festival Brides. It was born from her own engagement and wedding and from that came a passion from designing wedding stationery. Having been a bride herself, she knows exactly how important every aspect of your wedding is. She just gets it and that understanding will go a long way when it comes to helping you and her design your wedding stationery.

I really enjoyed taking a hands-on, creative approach to organising our wedding and I particularly enjoyed being able to use my illustration skills when creating our wedding stationery. We wanted save the dates and invitations that would capture us as a couple and reflect the style of our wedding so I took matters into my own hands and set about illustrating my own designs that were simple, fun and personal to us – just like the day itself.

We asked Katie all about how her gorgeous business started, the design process behind her illustrations and what she can offer you for your wedding day.

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I love long walks in the countryside, eating, painting, dancing, drawing and singing at the top of my voice!

My husband and my family and friends mean the world to me. Our lives are a mixture of work, laughter and play – with a lot of our time centred around food: the buying of it, watching programmes about it, reading recipes, cooking it and eating it! I love to travel, take photographs and look back on all of the wonderful memories we’ve made. Another of our favourite past-times is listening to records on our wonderful record player. We take a lot of pleasure in rediscovering some of our favourite albums on vinyl, as well as growing our collection through scouring charity shops and markets for old Motown and soul music.

Our 11 month-old Golden Retriever puppy Molly is incredibly entertaining and she has really brightened our lives. Our daily walks provide me with lots of ideas for my illustrations – I have always loved spending time outdoors and a lot of the inspiration for my artwork comes from the countryside and nature. Drawing is so therapeutic for me and I take great pleasure in creating beautiful images that are inspired by what I see so I always keep a sketch-book handy in case something inspires me.

If you had the chance to go to any music festival, which one would it be?

I was lucky enough to go to Glastonbury in 2014 and I’m not sure any other music festival could top it. It was unbelievable! I’m not even sure we managed to see everything when we were there as there was so much to discover. Definitely one to check off your bucket list.

What made you decide to start your beautiful stationery business, Hand Drawn By Katie?

I got married at the end of August 2015. I loved the process so much that I decided to start Hand-Drawn by Katie!

How would you best describe your design style?

Everything is illustrated by hand and has a lovely personal quality to it. All my stationery was a real labour of love to create. I really think that wedding stationery should be a little keep-sake: something to treasure that reminds you of what a wonderful, special day your wedding was.

Tell us a little bit more about your beautiful illustrated collections and the design process behind them?

I have a selection of ‘Existing Designs’ that can be customised for your wedding. I can even change the colours so that the design reflects the feel of your special day. I have illustrated all of my ‘Existing Designs’ by hand using a variety of different techniques. I then digitise everything so the colours of the design can be changed and little details can be altered. My stationery is printed on beautiful 300gsm Gesso card.

If our readers wanted you to create a bespoke design, what is the process and how long can it take?

With bespoke designs it is important to me that I meet with the couple in person or speak with them over the phone to discuss their ideas. When we’re happy to go ahead I design a page of the stationery to showcase what the feel of the full invitation pack will be like. If the couple are happy I will then design the rest of their invitation which I will send as a PDF for their approval. Any changes can be made at this point and we can repeat this process up to three times until everyone is happy with the finished product.

Everything is hand-illustrated. I use fine-liner pens, watercolours, oil pastels, collage and my trusty pro-markers. I scan my art-work onto my computer where I then piece everything together – this also gives me the flexibility to make changes to the colours or any other bits of the design that I would like to tweak. When the stationery is finished it is then professionally printed. Bespoke designs can take from 2 to 3 months to complete.

As well as your invitations, do you offer on the day stationery such as table plans, order of service and menus?

Absolutely! If you are interested in ordering on-the-day items such as a table plan, table numbers etc, as well as invitations – just ask!

What’s your best piece of advice for couples when it comes to choosing their wedding stationery?

Your save the dates and wedding invitations will often be the first hint at the style and feel of your special day. Having wedding stationery that is unique and personal to you is such a lovely touch so go for wedding stationery that really captures you as a couple.

Finally, what’s your life quote/motto at Hand Drawn By Katie?

It’s not really a motto but I always strive to bring a smile to people’s faces with my illustrations – that is so important to me. So much love and time goes into my artwork and if my stationery gets to be a part of a couple’s special day that is just the best feeling!
