I can’t quite believe that 1 year ago today, Bob and I said our official legal ‘I Do’s‘ at The Archbishops Palace in Maidstone which marked the start of our incredible 4 day festival wedding weekend. Thinking back to it now, I can remember every moment so clearly. I remember feeling surprised at how emotional I felt when I said those all important words…….I Laura take Bob to be my lawful wedded husband. I remember looking at our parents faces at that moment and seeing how proud and happy they were and not being able to control the tears!

Throughout the entire planning process, our legal ceremony was kept as small and informal as possible so it wouldn’t detract from the personal ceremony we had written and planned for the 4th May – our actual wedding day. Our parents were the only people invited and the room in which we said our vows looked more like a headmistresses/masters office than somewhere you could get married and that’s just how we wanted it! We didn’t want the ceremony to feel like we were getting married so Bob and I arrived together, met our parents, had a nice chat before hand and then in we went. The whole thing lasted no longer than 15 minutes and, like I said, that’s just how we wanted it. However! When we turned to face each other in front of a tiny fire place with some fake flowers in a vase, and Bob took my hands and looked right into my eyes and started saying those official words, something quite unexpected came over me…..

Those all important words that bind you in the eyes of the law as husband and wife are what we have all grown up hearing and associating marriage with. I had up until that point dismissed them as a mere formality that we had to go through in order to be ‘officially’ married but when I actually said them, I found myself being transported back to the many times I had day dreamed as a young girl about saying those words and the man I was going to marry. And there I was, saying them to my best friend and now husband. It was a very special moment and I will never forget it.

Bob and I always refer to the 4th of May as our wedding day and that is when we will be celebrating our first year anniversary. In fact, if I am completely honest with you we have never really talked too much about the legal ceremony but, when I woke up this morning and started thinking about what we were doing this time last year, I couldn’t let today pass without commemorating that unexpected special moment in some way.

One of the things we receive the most emails about is help with finding a venue that ticks all the boxes for an outdoor wedding and that comes with a legal licence to get married. The truth of the matter is those venues are few and far between and the ones that do exist are usually booked up well in advance. Bob and I made the hard decision to legally marry a few days before so we could book our dream wedding venue and have the outdoor ceremony we both wanted and it was honestly the best thing we ever did. Not only did I get to experience saying those ‘official words’ which until the time, I didn’t realise meant so much to me, but we also got to marry in the middle of a gorgeous woodland surrounded by our favourite people in a ceremony where we had the freedom to do whatever we wanted! We literally did have the best of both worlds!

So if you have found an amazing venue but it’s not licensed for legal ceremonies then so what! Book it and do what we did because I promise you – it doesn’t detract from the main event. If anything, it adds to it.

Bob and I are heading off now for the weekend to celebrate what was the most amazing weekend of our lives and I can’t wait!
